Hold the yarn in the opposite hand to your crochet hook. There is no correct way to hold the yarn, whichever you find more comfortable. It is important to maintain an even tension as pulling the yarn too tight or holding it too loose will affect your piece.
Parts to remember:
Turn your hand palm up.
Wrap the working yarn once around your pinky finger, so that the piece ends up behind your hand.
Bring the piece up the back of your hand and over your index finger.
Pinch the piece with your thumb and middle finger. Move the yarn tail behind your piece. The loop for the hook should be in the upper right-hand corner. To tighten or loosen the tension of the working yarn, move your index finger towards you or away from you. Insert the hook and you are ready to start.
