Adding color to your crochet projects can be a great way to make them stand out. Whether you’re looking to add a few stripes or create an intricate design, changing colors in crochet is an essential skill.
Changing colors in the round knot (step-by-step with photos)
Step 1
Colors are added the stitch before what the pattern says. So you need to crochet like normal then change before the last yarn over. For example, in a sc, pause when you have two loops of color A on the hook.
Step 2
Pick up color B and wrap it over the hook head. Leave a 6-inch tail in the new color. Pinch the yarn so you have tension.
Step 3
Pull color B through the loops on the hook. This completes the last yarn over.
Step 4
Adjust so the color B tail to about 4 inches. This will stop it from pulling through when you make the next stitch.
Step 5
Tighten up the stitches.
Step 6
Get into position with color B. Then remove the stitch marker as that is where the next stitch will go.
Step 7
Insert your hook under the next stitch, plus the tail of the color B and color A’s working yarn.
Step 8
With your next stitch, you should have two loops in color B.
Step 9
Continue to crochet as per the pattern. Crocheting over the top of the unused yarn.
Step 10
Keep crocheting over color A’s tail for the next 10 stitches. This ensures it doesn’t come undone. If you are going to use color A in the same or next round, keep crocheting over it, if not, cut the color and continue.
